"The Great Kosher Meat War of 1902" -- Book Talk by Award-Winning Author Scott Seligman (on Zoom)

The Hill Havurah Adult Programs Committee is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, December 6th, at 7:30 pm on Zoom, Scott Seligman will be discussing his book, The Great Kosher Meat War of 1902. Here is an excerpt from the book:

 

“In the wee hours of May 15, 1902, three thousand Jewish women quietly took up positions on the streets of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Convinced by the jump in the price of kosher meat that they were being gouged, they assembled in squads of five, intent on shutting down every kosher butcher shop in New York’s Jewish quarter. What was conceived as a nonviolent effort did not remain so for long...”

 

Scott D. Seligman is a national award-winning writer, an historian, a genealogist and a former corporate executive who holds an undergraduate degree in American history from Princeton and a master’s degree from Harvard. He spent much of his career in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, is fluent in Mandarin, and reads and writes Chinese. 

 

He is the author of eleven books, including four about early Chinese-Americans and three with Jewish themes. The Great Kosher Meat War of 1902 won gold medals in the 2021 Independent Publisher Book Awards and the Reader Views Literary Awards and was a finalist in the 2020 National Jewish Book Awards. Murder in Manchuria, about the Jewish community of Harbin, China, was published this past October, and it  just won first place in the general history category of the 20th Annual "Best Book" Awards, sponsored by American Bookfest. The Chief Rabbi’s Funeral, the story of the single largest antisemitic riot in American history, is due out in October, 2024.
