Judaism & Science: A Discussion with Author Roger Price (in-person indoors)

Sunday, October 17, 2021 11 Cheshvan 5782

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Please join us for a special adult programming event on Sunday morning, October 17, at 10:00 am, in the Shalom Room at Reformation (212 East Capitol Street, NE). Our speaker (visiting from Chicago) will be Roger Price, Blogmaster for the website Judaism and Science and author of When Judaism Meets Science. After an initial set of questions, Roger will answer questions from the audience. Since we'll be indoors, masks must be worn.

Roger's book, which was released in 2019, seeks to confront the challenge that modern science presents to Judaism and, by extension, the Jewish People. Uniquely, the book considers not only stories in the Tanakh, but also current social issues, and it even peeks into the future as well. No cows are sacred, as Roger treats both Torah and science seriously and builds a case for the value of a reality-based Judaism, one grounded on both traditional ethics and empirical evidence that can resonate with educated Jewish adults.

Over the years, Roger has taught at Hevreh: An Adult Jewish Learning Community, the URJ Summer Learning Institute, Limmud, Kickstart, and congregations across the country. Born and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. he is a graduate of the University of Michigan and The University of Chicago Law School. Schooled in a Conservative congregation, Roger was a member of the July, 1964 Aliyah at Brandeis Camp Institute (now Brandeis Collegiate Institute) in California where he met and studied with Mordecai M. Kaplan. Subsequently, he became president of the Federation of Reconstructionist Congregations and Havurot (now the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation). He is currently a member of Beth Emet, a Reform congregation in Evanston, Illinois.
