Death With the Rabbi: Exploring Jewish Perspectives on the End of Life and What Comes/May Come After -- Earliest stages of mourning, Burial vs. Cremation, and approaching shiva

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 12 Adar 5781

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

We are pleased and excited that Rabbi Hannah will be leading a series of four (4) single-topic discussions to enliven our winter evenings. We will be considering Jewish laws, practices, teachings, and traditions on topics related to the question: What Comes Before and After the End of Life?

Each of the sessions will examine how four prominent American Jewish denominations (Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, and Reform) look at and think about some of the most pressing ritual and social concerns that—sooner or later—all American Jews will confront. The discussions will include text study, lay guides, literature and poetry, psalms and songs, and modern questions and responsa.

Rabbi Hannah’s discussions will take place on Wednesdays, and they will start at 7:30 pm. Dates and topics are as follows:

  • January 27: Jewish Views of the Afterlife
  • February 10: End of Life, Hospice, and Euthanasia
  • February 24: Earliest stages of mourning, Burial vs. Cremation, and approaching shiva
  • March 10: Jewish mourning practices from shiva to shloshim, yahrzeit and yizkor

If you'd like to attend the February 24th discussion, please register here.
