Education Director for the Hill Havurah

Hill Havurah is looking for a creative and enthusiastic Jewish educator to develop and lead our two distinct education programs— Yavneh, our Jewish education school and Gan Shalom, our cooperative preschool. We are a growing, neighborhood-based, independent, Jewish community located on Capitol Hill. The Education Director is a full-time position.
The ideal candidate is passionate about early childhood and Jewish education and will have the requisite background, knowledge, and demeanor to thrive in two very different educational environments. Yavneh, the Jewish education school, currently serves 120 children ages 4-12 and meets Sundays 9am-1pm in space rented from a school. Gan Shalom is a two-classroom emergent cooperative pre-school for children ages 2-4 that meets Monday-Friday from 9am-1pm in space co-located with the Hill Havurah.
The position will include teacher recruitment, management, curriculum development, instructional support, community building, space-related logistics, and the mentoring of staff. The Educational Director will foster a supportive, creative, and dynamic setting for all programs; will work collaboratively with the Hill Havurah’s Rabbi, Operations staff, Education Committee and the Gan Shalom Executive Committee and parents; and will report to the Hill Havurah Chair and the Gan Shalom President.
 
Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Jewish Education, Child Development or a related field, with a preference for experience in an emergent early childhood classroom
  • At least 3 years in an education supervisory role with demonstrated experience in teacher coaching and curriculum planning and implementation
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Jewish life, traditions, and culture with ability to integrate these concepts into educational material appropriately for students 2-12 years old
  • Demonstrated experience with personnel and financial management
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to provide effective guidance and stability for program continuity and to act as a role model for staff and families
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • We are willing to consider candidates with a strong subset of the qualifications and a preference for a subset of the duties. We will adjust salary accordingly.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Ensure day-day operations are professionally organized and efficiently administered
  • Oversee all activities onsite at Gan Shalom from 8am-2pm Monday-Friday, September-July
  • Oversee all activities onsite at Yavneh from 9-1 on Sundays, September-June
  • Ensure compliance with DC school licensing body OSSE in partnership with Operations Director
  • Ensure the health and safety of all students at all times by (1) implementing and testing comprehensive emergency response plans, (2) ensuring appropriate adult-student ratios, (3) reviewing space, activities and field trip plans for safety, and (4) with teachers, developing and training a program-wide approach to classroom and behavior management.
Curriculum & Instruction
  • Engage Boards, Committees, parents, clergy, and staff to identify school values
  • With teaching staff, develop enhanced, emergent, integrated Jewish and age appropriate curriculum consistent with identified values and goals
  • Provide regular coaching to staff to improve curriculum implementation and enhance programs
  • Ensure staff has materials necessary to implement curricula, with Operations staff
  • Work with teachers to develop yearly teaching goals
Personnel Management
  • Hire teachers, assistants, and substitutes, with the leadership Committees
  • Create opportunities for staff professional development, formally and informally
  • Provide staff feedback at regular and expected intervals
Liaison between Board, Committees, staff and parents
  • Attend Gan Shalom Executive Committee and Yavneh Education Committee meetings, and inform staff about planning and decisions
  • Send regular newsletters, in conjunction with administrative assistant, to parents in both communities regarding curriculum, school-wide activities, deadlines, and updates
  • Address parent concerns in an appropriate manner
Budget/Fundraising Development
  • Assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of the annual budget for each program with Treasurers, leadership Committees, and Operations Director
  • Assist with the development and implementation of fundraising with fundraising chairs
Community Building
  • Develop and implement family education opportunities within each school
  • Develop and implement school holiday programming including content, staffing and marketing
Enrollment and Marketing
  • Oversee website updates and marketing material to increase enrollment
  • Attend outreach events, like open houses and school fairs
  • Develop and implement methods to address attrition
Space
  • Oversee rental space-related logistics including Yavneh rental contacts, with Operations staff
  • Develop and implement strategies for Yavneh and Gan Shalom to be good tenants
  • As necessary, assist locating suitable classroom space with Hill Havurah leadership
Strategic Planning
  • With stakeholders, develop, manage, implement and monitor short and long -term strategic plans for both programs
The position is a director level role with a salary $65,000-90,000 commensurate with experience.
