*In 70 CE when the second Temple faced total destruction, Rabbi Yohannen Ben Zakkai decided to escape the doomed city and rebuild Judaism elsewhere. The Rabbi and his students made their way to the coastal town of Yavneh. There he established an academy with the aim to preserve the vast body of Jewish law and learning even as the Temple burned and the Jewish people were sent into their long exile.
Yavneh on the Hill is our way of honoring the men and women whose perseverance in the face of destruction ensured the continuity of the Jewish religion. It also reflects our determination to ensure the continuity of the Jewish faith in our children.
Yavneh Behavior Policy
Our Yavneh Program is made up of many children who vary greatly in age, size & disposition. We would like Yavneh to be a positive place for everyone. We realize that as an after-school program, Yavneh is offered at a time when many children need to run around and shout, while others choose to decompress in quieter ways. In order to make this potentially high-energy after-school time pleasant for everyone, we ask that you go over the following basic “Behavior Guidelines” with your child(ren). Please familiarize your child(ren) with these rules so that we can maintain a positive focus and not get bogged down dealing with discipline issues. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Holly Shere
hollytaya@hotmail.com , the program coordinator, or parent coordinators, Elizabeth Dranitzke and Edith Shine.
RULES
- Respect your fellow classmates and your teacher.
- Talk in turn: No interrupting the teacher or other students.
- Talk respectfully, especially to adults but also to your fellow students.
- Take care of school supplies, materials, and facility.
- Listen to the teacher at all times and always follow directions.
- No rough play inside the building.
- Use inside voices at all times.
- Permission is needed to leave the classroom or the school property.
- Take care not to hurt others: do not hit, kick, bite or throw things.
If you believe your child may have trouble regularly following any of these rules please speak with us in advance so that we can try to accommodate his/her needs.
CONSEQUENCES
- A student who does not follow the rules will be given three “gentle reminders.” At the third reminder, the student will be asked to leave the classroom for five minutes and will bring a new copy of a behavior contract home to be signed by parent.
- If a student has been asked to leave the classroom two times, an attempt will be made to contact the parent from Yavneh to facilitate a parent/student conversation then.
- If a student has been asked to leave the classroom three times during one afternoon, the student will not be invited back to Yavneh for one week’s session.
- If a student has been required to miss two Yavneh sessions, the student, parents and teachers will meet to agree on the best course of action.
After you have reviewed this policy, please send an email to Holly Shere at: hollytaya@hotmail.com confirming that you and your child understand this policy.
